What frustrates me is that there is plenty of information available on how to start a &#8220;flexible,&#8221; work from home business, but not everyone wants to be a small business owner or an entrepreneur. A lot of people want to work a job or develop a career with a company &#8211; but also want to take advantage of the flexibility of an alternative work arrangement. Finding legitimate flexible work is made even more challenging due to the scammers and fakes who prey on honest people; taking their money and giving little or nothing in return. One way to transition to a more flexible work schedule while avoiding scams is to approach the manager at your <em>current</em> job about work-shifting or working from home a few days out of the workweek.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With our first named storm bearing down this season (Hurricane Irene) and a recent earthquake in the Washington, DC area it&#8217;s the yearly wake-up call for small businesses to start thinking about business continuity and disaster preparedness. I prefer to talk about it from this perspective, &#8216;continuity&#8217; and &#8216;preparedness&#8217;,  rather than &#8220;disaster recovery&#8221;. With a smart, flexible business structure in place, hopefully you won&#8217;t need much recovery.  Instead, you are fluid and can simply roll with whatever comes along.  If  you work in The Anywhere Office &#8211; you&#8217;re mobile and  can communicate and collaborate across time and distance. You can work where and when you need to &#8211; just like you do every day.</p>

<p>One common concern when allowing people to work from home, or anywhere outside the office, is the security of company data.  With more people using laptops, smartphones, and other portable computing devices company data is often used and accessed from multiple locations. While security should certainly be a concern when setting up a telework program &#8211; don&#8217;t let fear prevent you from taking advantage of all the flexibility this way of working has to offer.  With proper planning and forethought you can have the technology and policies in place to ensure your people can work from anywhere while still keeping your company data secure.</p>

One common concern when allowing people to work from home, or anywhere outside the office, is the security of company data.  With more people using laptops, smartphones, and other portable computing devices company data is often used and accessed from multiple locations. While security should certainly be a concern when setting up a telework program - don&#039;t let fear prevent you from taking advantage of all the flexibility this way of working has to offer.  With proper planning and forethought you can have the technology and policies in place to ensure your people can work from anywhere while still keeping your company data secure.

In part 9 of our podcast we&#039;ll be discussing security and confidentiality while looking at how to keep your data safe when people are working from remote locations.

For example &#8211; how will you choose teleworkers, who pays for equipment, and what kind of childcare is expected for employees working at home.  By discussing this upfront and creating a telework agreement it clarifies a shared vision of what the flexible work arrangements will look like in your company.</p>
<p>In part 6 of our podcast we look at the ground rules for telework and give you an overview of some essentials to discuss with HR and your employees to make sure everyone is on the same page.</p>
