Work Outside Your Office – A shift in perspective

January 28, 2010 by Phil Montero

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day in sunny Florida so I decided to work from the back patio rather than my home office as I usually do.  It got me to thinking about how this is another example of what Jason and I are always talking about with regards to changing your workstyle – small adjustments that lead to big results.  I recorded this short video to talk about it and encourage you to work from somewhere other than your usual workplace.

Please excuse the shaky camera work – I was holding the Flip camera instead of using a tripod as I wanted to be able to show you some of the surroundings.  I’m still learning how to hold it steady when shooting myself (either that or maybe I should have had a little less coffee!)

So what is your favorite alternative place to work? Post a comment below and let us know!

  • Still trapped in cube world, in the bowels of a factory. In before sunrise, out after sunset. My best view is of the back of a rusty storage cabinet. Somedays I imagine I can actually see the rust spread. I can only dream of the freedom of working virtually, ... for now!
  • I feel your pain Tony! You are not alone in longing for more work flexibility. Being you work in a factory is it the type of work you do that prevents you from being able to work outside or management/policy?

Despite some jobs appearing as though they can't be done remotely often you can lump tasks that can be location independent together and work at least part of your day or week from a different location. Of course this depends on your job and company.

I'm sending positive Anywhere Office vibes in your direction!
  • I am still in college, but this works to for me. when i get all stressed up inside studying, i go outside, go to my favorite cafe with my laptop and study there. Also, i have a friend who works at his own space in his own time, and guess what, he says he's more productive that way as compared when he's stuck in the 4-walled 'prison'.
  • Yes Kylie - it's amazing how just a small shift and change of scenery can help let go of the stress - especially working outside I find puts me in much better spirits! I definitely find I am more productive as well. Something about working in a different place, despite the possible distractions, just inspires me to fire it up! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
  • Great post Phil!

I do this myself. I love heading
outside of my workspace with my laptop
    in hand.

Maybe down to the local coffee shop
or something... to mix up the energy:)

    Thanks for the value...
  • Thanks Eric - yes the coffee shop is one of my favorite alternative places to work (being the coffee lover I am). There used to be a great local one here that I loved but unfortunately it closed so the only options now are the chains (like Starbucks, Panera, etc). I prefer the atmosphere of a small, local coffee shop - just can't seem to find any here in Port St. Lucie.
