Steve - great to hear you are yet another person who was able to break free from the Outlook grip and embrace web mail and calendaring. Still trying to get my wife to give up Outlook - her mail comes into Gmail but she still reads it with Outlook - baby steps I guess :-)

I too am trying to get away from MS Office as well and use Google Docs. I still have a lot of older docs in Office so I open and use them there but pretty much all new documents I create are in Docs. I love that they all live online so are easy to access from anywhere or any computer. Also makes it super easy to share them with Jason when we are collaborating on them. Real time co-editing is pretty awesome too. It is great for us both to be looking at the document while on the phone and as one of us makes changes the other sees it almost immediately.

I still need PowerPoint as I haven't been that impressed with the presentation software piece. I thought about giving Open Office a try but it's still local and so doesn't have the advantage of being cloud based.

Great tip about saving in the older Office 2003 format. In fact I have all my Office 2007 apps set to do that by default because a lot of people still haven't upgraded to the newer version.

Would love to hear more about you migration to Google Docs so be sure to check back in and let us know how you are doing with that! Thanks for sharing your experience!

I completely agree. I disconnected from Outlook, and am much happier for it. And I have avoided all those mysterious system crashes. I use Google Apps as well as Remember the Milk, with great success. They all extend to my other computers and iPhone with ease. I also now realize how when I used Microsoft Outlook I was becoming a MS Bigot, thinking that my nice formating and calendar invitations worked easily for the others I worked with -- but now learning how they only work well for other Outlook users.
I am trying to wean myself off Office as well, but it is more difficult because so many other people use it automatically. Even my kids' schools are shilling Office 2007. My advice here is to at least save documents in Office 2003 format (.doc, .ppt, .xls) and avoid the .docx, .pptx, and .xlsx versions that require more space and are difficult for some other people to read. I look forward to when I can use Google Docs for everything.
